Sports bloggers if you haven’t noticed already, there aren’t many blogs, information or tips on how to make money specifically from “sports blogging”. Why is that? Are sports bloggers not making any money? That can’t be true. In fact 51% of sports bloggers make more than $100 per month either through ad revenue or payment for articles. For most sports bloggers starting out it was simply about the love for sports. Whether it be a local team, favorite player or sports in general. We were looking for an outlet to get our opinion and message heard and provide a fan’s perspective not represented by mainstream media.
Therefore, making money from our sports blog wasn’t our initial priority and internet marketing probably isn’t a core strength among most sports bloggers. Without question a successful sports blog begins and ends with great, unique content. But, sandwiched between needs to be consistent support of that content through promotion, search engine optimization and other marketing activities.
The problem: figuring out what works and what doesn’t for sports blogging specifically. There are millions of blogs offerings “how to make money from blogging” information on the web now. The challenge for sports bloggers is taking strategies that work in the tech and blogs about “blogging” arena and adapting them to sports blogging. With that minor problem before us I decided to create Sports Blog Earnings, a place where sports bloggers will discuss and find simple yet effective tips to improve and monetize their sports blog.
Sports Blog Earnings will cover:
Finally, what you can do to help yourself as well as contribute to the sports blogging community:

I told you about my new job doing SEO, and a word of advice. You guys killed yourselves on the move, you had a pagerank of 4 with reclinergm.wordpress.com. When you moved to just reclinergm.com you do not bring you pagerank along and are virtually starting from scratch in Googles eyes. Huge no no in the SEO world. Just some food for thought. Although I think you will be able to attain that sooner then later with a good presence on the Net already.

Brian - This site is still in development. Our primary blog is the Recliner GM with our basketball only blog, Hoop State of Mind being worked on now as well. The plan is to begin monetizing those blogs and write about the strategies and test we use on those sports only blogs to produce content for this one.
This blog I have a ton of ideas for and I am writing and writing and writing behind the scenes now. I want to have a bank of articles when I first start publishing so I don’t go long stretches without content and potentially lose readers in the early stages.
Since you are now working on SEO if you want to write guest posts let me know. We are going to start accepting and review guest post on all our blogs going forward. Big things to come.
Regarding the Google pagerank - I know we had/have a pagerank of 4 on the wordpress.com hosted blog we started, but like most sports bloggers we didn’t start out with the intention of monetizing our blog so eventually changing domains wasn’t even a consideration when we started. We were able to create that pagerank in only 3 months and am confident we will get our Google juice back even faster on the new blog considering our theme is already SEO optimized, now we have more flexibility besides just great content to improve SEO and I know tremedously more about blogging, SEO and blog promotion. No worries.
What up!
New site I see… : )
Kellex - Yeah I have wanted to do this type of site since I started sports blogging but needs to learn the business of blogging first. I have a few articles written and two pages worth of other post ideas. So hopefully we can tag team and help sports bloggers make some (more) money.
Still working out the kinks in this theme, but should be posting regularly the beginning of May.
Right on. I’m excited for this. There is basically you…and me…and no one else doing this so far.
I’m here for anything you need as this is a complete work in progress for me. I think the potential is there for this to become a nice thing for the both of us.
Kellex - I completely agree with you. I think we can help a lot of people and in doing that help ourselves in the process.
Cool site, as a Sports Blogger looking to make even more $, this seems like a good place!
James - thanks to start I am going to try and post one quality article per week. I read your guest post on The Sports Dollar and it was great. If you ever want to guest post on the topic of making money from sports blogs here let me know.
Hi Dannie,
Great idea! I’ve dropped and subscribed. Look forward to your advice. I’m just starting out and have a little different angle on a sports blog. Would appreciate you taking a look and giving me your two cents worth.
Thanks!
Dan
Dan - Thanks for visiting the site. I like your blog a lot. Great niche in sports. I will keep an eye out for post I can link to from my other sports blogs.
Hi there. Just started a sports blog of my own, and came across your blog while searching for the best way to monetize. I’ll be following your posts regularly. I have no problem with the writing portion, but any SEO/Monetization tips I can pick up will be a huge help to a new blogger like myself.
